ACLs Read-only question...

Hello All

I have a network setup of Windows client PCs and an Ubuntu server. The home directory on the Ubuntu server contains users personal directories as well as a shared directory which all users of the server have access to.

I have ACLs in place to ensure that only those with the correct permissions can read, modify or open a file.

The problem is that when a user sets a document to read-only in the shared directory it doesnt work (using their windows PC, and clickin the right mouse button on the document, and setting the attribute to read-only in the properties menu) as the document doesn not get marked as this! There are also no error messages. However if a documnet gets marked as read only in their own directories all works fine!

Any ideas why this may be???...

Many thanks in advance!

t.

my first instinct is to say that because that when the user changes files in HIS directory, he is the owner of that file, in the shared directory they are not the owner. Only the owner of a file or root can change the files permissions
