A few questions pertaining to getting X up and running...

had trouble figuring out where to post this...i'm a 'semi-newbie' when it comes to linux i suppose

Problem: I have Debian 3.0r2...newly installed today. And of course, I'd like to get X up and running. However, whenever I try to start it it says something to the effect of "No screen found".

I have a Geforce4 Ti4200 (128MB DDR)...and my XF86Config is using the nv module.

What I've tried: I've compiled the 2.6.2 kernel (wanted to do this anyway). No problems there, it boots and everything appears normal.

Installing the drivers from nvidia's site...that didn't work either, i got "ERROR: Unable to determine the NVIDIA kernel module filename."

so i figure i did something wrong in compiling the kernel.

any suggestions?

edit your XF86Config file and change the video driver to nvidia instead of nv

should start X now but will be using the generic driver.

download the nvidia drivers, restart the computer in runlevel 3, execute the driver, change back to runlevel 5 then reboot the machine.

should work now
