xine & RedHat 9

Hey all,
I've got xine, just installed and have a 'friend' coming over to watch a movie. But the bloody thing doesn't work. Here's the problem:
I installed everything, got no errors blah blah blah. Installed gxine; same thing, no errors, nothing. I thought everything was fine. I started gxine and when it loads, I get the splash screen and the program loads. BUT, when I try to do anything with it, it has no text whatsoever. I try the open dialogue and it comes up and there's the normal boxes and such but none of the file names are displayed and none of the boxes have captions. I can select files, but I have no idea which files I'm selecting (on account of not being able to see the names). Has this happened to anyone else? Is there any fix for this besides going over to Ogle and possibly getting the same shit? Any help would be much appreciated.
