SuSE9.1 && Xine

Hi all,

Well, I've only been back on land for a week now, and I'm leaving again on the 30th, but I cannot seem to find info on why SuSE9.1 doesn't allow you to play DVDs anymore with Xine. Something about copywrights is what the program says.

Any ideas or threads floating around out there about how to get around this?

Tnx.

You'll need a different (not SuSE) version of Xine as well as libdvdcss. It's use is illegal in some countries. Have a look at http://packman.links2linux.de/ for these packages. De-install Xine before you install the new packages.

BTW: Packman files are availlable as Yast source. You may add the HTTP server packman.iu-bremen.de and the directory suse/9.1 to your installation sources (Yast -> Change Source of Installation).

Get the following packages from

http://packman.links2linux.de and
http://heidelberg.freshrpms.net/rpm.html?id=166

The packages:

libtheora-0.9_1.0alpha3-0.pm.0.i586.rpm libvorbis-1.1.0-0.pm.0.i586.rpm
kaffeine-0.4.3b-0.pm.0.i586.rpm libxine1-1_rc7-0.pm.0.i586.rpm
kaffeine-mozilla-0.2-0.pm.0.i586.rpm speex-1.1.6-0.pm.0.i586.rpm
libdvdcss-1.2.8-4.1.fc3.fr.i386.rpm w32codec-all-20041107-0.pm.0.i386.rpm
libdvdread-0.9.4-5.1.fc3.fr.i386.rpm xine-0.99.2-1.1.fc3.fr.i386.rpm
libogg-1.1.2-0.pm.0.i586.rpm

Then run the following commands:

rpm -Uvh libdvdread-0.9.4-5.1.fc3.fr.i386.rpm
rpm -Uvh libdvdcss-1.2.8-4.1.fc3.fr.i386.rpm
rpm -Uvh kaffeine-* libxine1-1_rc7-0.pm.0.i586.rpm w32* spe*

to get rid of the choppyness:

hdparm -d1 /dev/dvd

put this in a startup script /etc/rc.d/boot.local

This will get DVDs working in SUSE 9.1

I know your question was about xine, but the easiest solution to play DVD's is installing mplayer.

take a look at this thread:
