X-windows through ssh

Hey!!

I am trying to run x-windows applications remotly from my windows computer. Using cygwin logging with ssh to my slackware box. Using ssh -X as Pr1sg explained in a previous thread I get this warning message. No xauth data; using fake authentication data för X11 forwading. I suppose this is why I cant start any x-windows applications but I'm not sure.

Anyone that knows what to do to get it to work?

This is shortly what pr1sg wrote:

Go into /etc/ssh/sshd_config
and set the following:

X11Forwarding yes
X11DisplayOffset 10
X11UseLocalhost yes

then from cygwin type

ssh -X your_Linux_box_ip_address_or_domain

yes, you need to use a thin-client system.
vnc (http://www.realvnc.com)
is good, cross-platform, although you will need to have a decent link between the two pc's, i have a 100MBPS Full-Duplex LAN, and it works OK with 8-bit colour.
also, you don't need cygwin just to do SSH, putty (http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/) is good for windoze boxes.

I thought you didn't NEED to do it with vnc but that you could tunnel X through SSH. I'm actually googling around for this info today as well.

Although with VNC, you could get TightVNC for windows and use a windows client to log on to your vnc server (running linux) without having to use cygwin (but cygwin is definitely cool anyway)

If I find a how-to or relevent link, I'll post it. If someone out there has one...can you share?

I assume you're actually running an X server on your cygwin system? Does X work locally?

yes i am runnig x-windows on cygwin and it works fine. From there i ssh -X to the slackware box and it works fine to log in with ssh but i get this warning (No xauth data; using fake autehentication for X11 forwading) and then i cant run any x-windows applications remotely.

When trying to run xeyes remotly i get: Error: Can't open display. So i tried :
export DISPLAY=localhost:0

and then i get:
Xlib: connection to "localhost:0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified

Must be somone out there that has run in to problems like this when they tried to set this up.

The fake xauth message is just informational. Everything should still work.
I think all you need to do is allow others hosts to open windows on your display. Do this with "xhost +" on your windows box, which on a home LAN is probably sufficient, but if you want to only allow a particular host then you could do "xhost +192.168.1.1" using your slackware box IPADDR.

xhost + every boot?

I ran into this similar problem and was wondering if there was a way that I could toggle the xhost command so I didn't have to type it in every time the system was rebooted...which yes happens alot
