X on a Windows Machine using ssh

Hi there,

I hope this is the right forum for my question.
I'm running a ssh-server on my linux machine.
When I'm at work on a windows machine I want to log an to my ssh-server via putty. So far this is working. But when I start X-Applications like xmms or xchat it doesn't work.
I mean that's no wonder, but is there any chance to get this working under windows?

thx for help
greetz

If you install an X server for windows such as Cygwin it should work fine.

yes, Cygwin
of course, install the X server and openssh

then do something like
startx
ssh -X ip_of_your_machine

-X tells X to forward X packets

on your Linux machine, check your sshd.conf and make sure X11Forwarding is set to True.
if you are behind a firewall and X can't connect to port 6000 on your local machine, do this

ssh -X -R 6000:localhost:6000 your_ip
this will set up X forwarding over the ssh tunnel

this should work. if you are still getting strange errors in X (unable to open display), try this in sh
$ echo $DISPLAY
should be somethign like localhost:0
if not (sometimes blank)
export DISPLAY=localhost:0

normally not necessary, but i had to do that in my setup

It's that easy???
Then I'll try that as soon as I'm at home!

Thanks a lot
