hi to all of you. i'm new to Linux, i have recently installed linux Ubuntu [9.04]-Wubi on my desktop, it works fine, I'm using 3g cell Modem Huawei E169, it works fine with Ubuntu, well recognized by it- out of the box. i want to buy a cell router to connect the modem to, and put it in the attic or close to the roof or something, [for the purpose of both improving the cell signal reception strength and to be away as possible from the harmful cell radiation]. my computer agent suggested router: Edimax 3g-6200WG, but he dosnt seems to know whether it can work with Linux. does any one know whether the Edimax 3g-6200WG can be put on Linux Ubuntu? and if not, please suggest other model, here is a summary of it's requirements: cell router in which an external 3G USB modem is attached to it, [not a router in which the modem is embedded in it], the router is then connected to the PC by either a wire or wirelessly. thanks for any help.
It should work just fine with linux. Attach your E169 to the 3g-6200WG, and connect it to your desktop with an ethernet cable, then configure it so your desktop can connect to the internet.
If your desktop has wireless, disconnect the ethernet cable and try getting a wireless connection to the router.
If all good so far, put the Edimax 3g-6200WG in the roof, and then either run a cable, or use its wireless capability.
Hi, thanks very much for helping. now that i know that the Edimax 3g-6200WG is compatible with Ubuntu, in the upcoming days I'm gonna buy that router. i would probably keep asking some LiuxQuestions regarding its configuration. again thanks for the help.
Hi to all of you. Finally, at last I bought the above mentioned Edimax 3g 6200 WG Router. As soon as I connected it [by a wire] to my Linux it worked fine, out of the box, without configurations. On the top right of my Ubunto screen, the Network Connections icon appears now as “Wired”, instead of Mobile Broadband that used to be when the 3G usb modem was connected directly [with no router] to the PC. the problem with that is that I'm subscribed with a cellular service provider company to an internet package of 5 Gigabytes per month only, [oversurfing it , would mean extra, expensive charge]. Earlier, with the 3G modem being connected directly, I downloaded and installed http://www.gnomefiles.org/app.php/gtraffic -which is a simle network traffic counter, that lets you know how much you have downloaded. When the modem connects via the router, the Gtraffic counter doesn't work- no counting. Is there a traffic counter Linux application [preferably with a grafic interface] that i can install to work with the router instead of the Gtraffic? [the application should have the possibility to reset at any given time as my 5 Giga count starts at the 17th' of each month, the day i first subscribed]. Thanks very much for any help.
