WinXP locks opening Samba filesystem

Hi,

I have two Windows XP Home machines that are accessing files on a Samba server on Redhat 7.3. When they try to rename a file it will lock up and hang for 30-60 seconds. Anytime they try to open more that one file, the first file is the only one that opens, and their windows boxes just hang. The wierd thing about it is that it only happens some of the time and only on those two boxes. Other computers in the company have seen no trouble. Has anyone experienced similar problems and found a solution.

I have seen a similar issue. It turned out to be a dns issue in my case. The XP boxes would request a DNS resolution, time out after a period of time, then finally connect using IP.

We also had weird unattended kickstarted install issues with Red Hat installing from a w2k3 server. File copys would take an extreamly long time to start. Turned out, all we had to do was put a localhost.localdomain = 127.0.0.1 in our DNS records. Weird.

Not sure if you are seeing the same issue though.

Would you need to do that on the Linux box or the XP machine?
