Windows XP MMC to remove security settings for samba

Has anyone used the microsoft management console (mmc) to disable the security policies of a Windows XP client to allow easier access to samba shares on a samba host? I am experimenting with this and am wondering about overall security issues this will cause and detrimental effects to the client OS. It seems that it has opened up my access considerably, but I'm really in uncharted territory as far as my experience goes.
