I'm totally new to Linux and to networking so I'm sorry if this is all obvious.

I have just installed Mandrake 9.1 on a HP Vectra VEi8 and set up a static IP address for now (I'll move onto DNS etc later on).

I am running XP Pro on a PC and have linked the two together using network cards and a crossed cat5 cable.

I think I have set up the SAMBA correctly but I'm not sure -it appears on My Network Places on the XP


My problem is that I can ping the XP box from itself and from the Linux box but I can't ping the Linux box from itself or from XP box.

Any help would be appreciated

Pinging is a useful diagnostic tool for both good guys and bad guys. For reasons of security a Linux box can be set up not to respond to pings. I usually do that with the firewall. If you feel it is safe to turn off the firewall, or if you can reconfigure the firewall to accept pings you may solve that problem. It may not be a problem because your network appears to communicate with the XP box.

Can you transfer files between the two?
