Hi friends,
i have a problem here... in my windows PC i have installed VM ware Player.. and on that i have installed DebainEtch OS... so when i type ifconfig in the Debain it is telling the IP address of the system as 192.168.188.128.. but My windows PC where i have installed VM ware the IP address is in the different network say My IP address of the windows PC is 192.168.33.104...
so from an externel PC I can ping 192.168.33.104 IP but not 192.168.188.128...
so, how do i ping to IP address 192.168.188.128 from the externel PC ???
is it possible ?? if yes please help me to solve this problem..
thanks.. )
I'm using WmWare Worksation so I don't know if it's exactly the same, but if you bridge the NIC of your virtual machine to the physical one in you virtual machine settings, it should work.
Do you have access to the vmware network settings with the vmware player ???
ya i can configure as DHCP or i can give statically..

I think you need to enable IP forwarding in windows xp
i have already done that.. but even then the problem persists..
today i made some more observations...
when i go to show all network connections in my PC it is showing 2 more interfaces Vmnet1(with IP 192.168.27.1) and Vmnet8(with IP 192.168.247.1) and when i see the IP address of these 2 it is totally different from the IP address "when i do an ifconfig(with IP 192.168.247.128) in the DeebainEtch" all these are the observations with the NAT configuration in VmWare Player..
so from MY PC (win XP ) i am able to ping all the 3 ip addresses namely Vmnet1 Vmnet8 and the ifconfig IP address... but say from another machine(in the LAN)with IP address 192.168.174.75 i am able to ping the Vmnet1 IP address only not the other 2!!!!!!!!! and also i even checked with BRIDGED and HOST-ONLY configurations... but no result...
i am totally confused please someone help me... how to ping all the 3 IP addresses from another PC in the LAN ???
thanks...
ya i can configure as DHCP or i can give statically..
I'm not talking about how you configure the card in the OS running under VMWare. I was referring to the VMWare options that allow you to run in Bridged, Host, or NAT mode at the VMWare level.
I think the VMWare player defaults to NAT, and can't be changed.
**Update** My bad, I just re-read what you put, and it looks like you did try all the modes.
My guess is that it's the routing tables in one, or more of the "real" machines that need to be set up to allow this.
OK, I've thought about this a bit more. How are the machines connected, and what is the default Gateway for each. If the Gateway isn't the machine running the VMWare image, then how does each machine know that it has to send the request to that particular box. It has no knowledge of the IPs that are in the VMWare guest, and so sends anything it doesn't recognise to the default Gateway.
You will need to add a route, or routes, from each of the other boxes, that direct any of the traffic, that is intended for the VMWare quest, to the box where it's running.
Distribution: RHEL 4 and up, CentOS 5.x, Fedora Core 5 and up, Ubuntu 8 and up

If I were you I would ditch VMware Player and Install VMware Server. VMware Server is free.
VMware Server on Windows XP will ask on install if you want to set a bridged connection which of course you do. A bridged connection the easy way I understand it and can explain it to you: shares one NIC, in this case the host machine at 192.168.0.1. So VMware Server creates its own network but the Virtual Machine will pull an address from the same network the Windows XP box is on. So if your home router is using DHCP it would allocate the next available IP address, so your XP box is 192.168.0.1 and your Virtual Machine would be 192.168.0.2. Once that was done you could forward the ports needed to access the Virtual Machine. I would set your Virtual Machine with a static address.
Setting up VMware Server is easy. If you haven't figured it out yet post back or PM and I can walk you through it.
fine... i will tell my problem in detail in other way....
All the below are with respect to the NAT configuration in the VM Player.
# My PC(windows XP) 192.168.33.104 with netmask 255.255.248.0 and default gateway 192.168.178.6 with persistant routes to
192.168.178.0, 192.168.6.0, 192.168.174.0, 192.168.172.0, 192.168.33.0
# With VMware player running (the DebainEtch)there will be 2 more interfaces in the network connection in windows namely
VMnet1(IP address 192.168.247.1 and gateway field is blank) and VMnet8(IP address 192.168.247.1 and gateway field is blank)
# Now i am pinging from an External PC which is in the same LAN where my PC is connected. The IP address of this PC is
192.168.174.75 with netmask 255.255.255.0 and default gateway 192.168.174.47.
# When i do an ifconfig in the DebainEtch in VMPlayer it is showing the IP address which is in the same subnet as of Vmnet1
i.e. ifconfig IP is 192.168.27.128. and from this DebainEtch i am able to ping to 192.168.174.75(External PC) and 192.168.33.104(My PC)
# From My PC i am able to ping all VMnet1 and VMnet8 and ifconfig IP's.
# From the Externel PC i am able to ping VMnet1 successfully and when i ping ifconfig and VMnet8
it is telling ""Time to live exceeded""
# So why i am not able to ping ifconfig IP from the Externel PC when i am able to ping that PC from here ??? ??? !!!
and when i try do add a route to 27.0 subnet it is telling Network unreachable !!!
/sbin/route add -net 192.168.27.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 192.168.33.104
SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable

Reason: missed some points
No i had tried this long back....when i change the netmask and ping the VMware ifconfig IP (192.168.27.128)
this gives different message... Destination host not reachable... !!!
