UW Imap 2004g not authenticating users[Resolved]

Ok I have a server with Redhat Linux 3.0AS. I just setup and configured the uw-imap. The c-client functions just fine, as I have a php script that goes out and checks imap boxes, but when I try to point it to the local server I get an imap authentication error.

The imap server returns the following error:
Can not authenticate to IMAP server: AUTHENTICATE LOGIN failed

Now the first assumption of everyone is(and should be) that the user is just wrong. If I modify the script to connect via pop protocol, it will connect to the mailbox, so this is obviously an issue with the imap server not being able to authenticate users correctly.

The first time around I got a SASL authentication error, but I rebuilt it so that it would allow plain text logins. Also I have it set to use standard linux passwd file.

Any ideas on what the hangup could be would be appreciated.

Just some additional log info to try to help:

This is what happens when I try with imap
Code:
Aug 5 12:40:33 server imapd[5554]: Login failed user=x_user auth=x_user host=x_host.com [127.0.0.1]
Aug 5 12:40:33 server imapd[5554]: imap service init from 127.0.0.1
Aug 5 12:40:36 server imapd[5554]: AUTHENTICATE LOGIN failure host=x_host.com [127.0.0.1]
This is the successful connect with pop.
Code:
Aug 5 12:42:25 server popa3d[11385]: Authentication passed for x_user from 127.0.0.1
As you can see this clearly has to be imap not reading the user information correctly. Any ideas???

The server used PAM authentication, I didn't realize this at first. I added in a pam module for IMAP did a rebuild with PAM support, and all seems to work well now.
