using windows machine as gateway
I'm trying to get my rh7.1 box to use a windows 98 box as a gateway machine so that it can access the internet - internet sharing works when I'm using the windows on the same machine (it's dual boot), but I can't get it to work with the same settings when using linux - could anyone suggest some things for me to try? (I'm using sygate home network btw)
Thanks.

You need to do this
ifconfig eth0 192.168.0.2 netmask 255.255.255.0
and
route add default gw 192.168.0.1
add your nameservers to /etc/resolv.conf like this
nameserver 11.111.11.111
substitute the correct numbers and you should be ok.

Hi,
Thanks for your help - however I've done what you suggested, and back in the world of GNOME when I try to use the netscape browser, I get "connect: looking up host <whatever>" and nothing beyond that - if I leave it for long enough netscape just hangs, and I have to kill it!
Any more suggestions?

You need to configure netscape to connect to this. Looks at the proxies section under the preferences. It should be pretty self explanatory.
I had this same issue not too long ago. You can also try out the tsocks program at freshmeat.net. Somepeople have reported success, although I couldn't get it to work properly.
Check out these links.

I think it would be a better idea to use your linux box as your gateway. Linux is more secure than win 98.

i don't think its netscape, unless your windows machine is a proxy server or you use one on your isp and its required, if you have a connection, netscape should work. what happens when you try to ping out to a IP address? that should determine if your connected or not, or try a IP address of a website within Netscape to see if it connects that way.
but it seems to me that your still not connected if netscape still hangs and does not load anything.

i think this should work...
if you dont have a proxy server setup on your win box, goto www.analogx.com and get their free proxy installed... start the proxy, and then use winipcfg in windows to get your ip address, then goto netscapes proxy settings in the prefrences and add the windows box's ip as the proxy address...

Yeah, you're right - when I try and ping any IP address I get no response - even the machine I'm trying to connect to on my local network...
