using `mail` to send email to outside world

I've been using `mail` to send mail to local users. However in the linux box at the company where i work, `mail` can be used to send email to the outside world as well. When i try it at home, it doesn't work and it doesn't give me an error (possibly directed to logs but which i don't know where they are).

the format is the same i use at the company's linux box -

mail -s"message subject" user\ < message_to_be_included
