How is your setup? What is the distro? The config depends on what kind of distro you're using. I'm using CentOS and like other RedHat based systems it'r quite straightforward to setup virtual adapters. You just make a file called ifcfg-eth0:1 and so on and make sure that it has DEVICE=eth0:1 or the same as the name of the file.
But maybe I should first ask you what ifconfig gives you.
