Red face Telnet Redhat 8.0 connection refused.

Hi,

Just installed redhat 8.0. Try to telnet the linux from remote machine. But today I just can't telnet it any more.

check the following setting:

# /sbin/chkconfig --list telnet
telnet on

# grep disable /etc/xinetd.d/telnet
disable = no

via lokkit I disabled the firewall and I also executed /etc/iptables stop

ied gnome-lokkit to reset firewall rules, tried redhat-config-securitylevel to change security level, but nothing seems working.

There is notthing in my checked /etc/hosts.deny file
also I set checked /etc/hosts.allow to ALL:ALL

Anyone can help? Thanks a lot.

Try running:
iptables -F

to remove all your firwall rules then if telnet works save them:
service iptables save

Then use lokkit to setup your firewall again.

Can you telnet to 127.0.0.1 from the server itself?

Do you have an FTP server running?

Did you restart xinetd?
service xinetd restart

Yes, yes. The ftp server and telnet are runing. I can see it [root@ftpserver /]# chkconfig --list | grep -i vsftp
vsftpd: on

[root@ftpserver /]# chkconfig --list | grep -i telnet
telnet: on

[root@ftpserver /]# chkconfig --list | grep -i xin
xinetd 0ff 1ff 2ff 3n 4n 5n 6ff

[[root@ftpserver /]# service xinetd --full-restart
Stopping xinetd: [ OK ]
Starting xinetd: [ OK ]

thanks

how do you check for route tables.
FYI
[root@ftpserver /]# chkconfig --list | grep -i iptables
iptables off 1ff 2n 3n 4n 5ff 6ff

root@ftpserver /]# service iptables status
Table: filter
Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination

Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination

Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination

Problem solved. /etc/xinited/telnet & vsftps files did not have an extra blank line at the files.
