telnet
Are you trying to telnet and login as root?
If you are you can't do that, you can only su into root once your logged in to the machine using another account.
Its also not a good idea if your telnetting across the internet to your machine not to su into root, not very secure unless you don't care for anyone to be able to get into your machine.

not root
no i am not trying to get in as root
i cannot even get into the telnet thing itself
i had it working, once
but then i compiled some web-mail program and managed to kill x server
and could not get that to work.
so i reinstalled (i do alot of that cos i keep breaking it)
and now i cannot get telnet to work
nothing but a login prompt, pressakey and it says password: pressakey and is says login invalid
i am just stuck (and probably the most simple problem ever)
so if some one some where please help me
thankyou

Pressakey...huh
who are you trying to login as then....? if its just a user account you've created, then check their permissions and does that user account work on the machine itself?

I have no clue.....
Sounds to me something went wrong during that initial install, especially since it worked until you reinstalled.
Might want to try it again, never heard of anything like what your explaining.
Sorry I couldn't help in anyother way.

GOT IT!
telnet did not send any data over the network because the security setting were set to PARANOID this switches most tcp/ip ports off including telnet.
but when reenabled it still will not work! dont know how or why.
reinstalled it with medium security and it works first time.
User error, replace user and press any key !
thanks to all that helped me!
