Switches: Managed, Smart, Unmanaged.

Right now we are running a gigabit network with unmanagead switches. What do i gain performance wise and capability wise with moving to smart and managed and do these benefits make the cost worth it?

Performance wise I'd expect a minimal impact between all three types of switches. Smart switches appear to be a subclass of managed switch. That is to say, they have some features of managed switches, but usually only via a web interface. The capabilities of smart switches likely vary by vendor.

See this page for a bit more detail: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_switch
