One last comment on this thread. Turns out I didn't have a "router" after all, just an adsl modem. I'm getting an IP share box and an 8-hub router and will soon have it figured out to use the linux box as a gateway, firewall, file and print server. I've got the info I need now.
TKU Chris; the data about public and private networks was what I needed.
