I have pcs running winXP + other laptops & pcs running suse 9.3 and I can get the XP machines to see each other but can't see any network shares between Windoze and Linux - nor can I get the Linux machines to see each other.
I live in Taiwan and was supplied a Teco ADSL router but no handbook, looks like I can't control the router which gives me auto dhcp. I can get each machine (each OS) to connect to the internet but not to each other.
What I want to do is have a single server (oldish P2 300 machine) that will share files to any connected computer and also share its printers or CD drive. I have Suse 9.3 on this old pc, configured Samba server there and worked through many configurations on both systems but no joy.
Can someone suggest a simple handling to a very frustrated user?

your looking for a program calld "samba" more then likely it came with your distrobution. google for samba howto and you should be able to find what you need. If you have any problems configuring samba repost here.
Thanks for your reply. I googled and found a Samba page I hadn't seen before but so far no time available to checkitout. I hope I can call on you again if I need.
* I turned off the firewalls, (Linux box running Samba and pc - Winxp Professional) and both were able to access the internet through the adsl router but the Linux box could not ping the XP box on the "autoconfiguration ip address" for the "Local Area Connection"
- It did however, ping the IP address given for the "ppp adaptor + (adsl loggon)".
There seems to be something very simple here that I am missing; I can't get either machine to see each other.
(To Chris) I've been away. Before replying I tried some advice from Tweakhound. He gave specific instructions for setting up Samba on XP and Suse9.3 boxes. I set up the XP box with ip address 10.10.10.8 and configured this address into the Linux box. But when I smb4k'd (to browse network) even the scanning process froze up. Konqueror was no good either (crash! Internal error ... connection timed out)
I'm confused. If I set a fixed ip address on XP, is this set of numbers no good?
I've carefully gone through the whole procedure again, fixed ip address on XP (10.10.10.8) and all Samba settings on the Suse9.3 box - including hostsallow. I've tried setting the XP machine name and my user name, each time browsing with Konqueror and getting the "Internal Error" message.
I've been using Suse9.3 now for some months and have yet to see any network shares. Something simple, I'm sure.
Thanks. I did it and got:
"Error connecting to 10.10.10.8 (Network is unreachable)
7090: Connection to 10.10.10.8 failed
SMB connection failed"
(The windows firewall was off, both boxes - XP, Linux - connect to the internet just fine through my adsl router, although I had not run the ppp script on the Linux box when I ran this command.)

the reason why they cannot connect to each other is because they are on different networks, the 10.10.10.8 is a private class A address, and the 218.170.41.27 is a public address. From what you've been posting i'm guessing that in order for them to get on the internet you unplug one from the adsl modem and plug in another one. To do what you want you have 2 options. If you have a spare network card laying around you can configure your suse box as a router. Or you can buy a router that supports pppoe.
1. Not exactly. All my computers link up to this router and I don't have to unplug anything for them to have internet access. Usually, the XP boxes can be fiddled with until they see each other through this router - at least their "SharedDocs Folder". Also, I have a laser printer on one XP box that the other XP can use through the router setup. [Not totally reliable though, this connection has to re-set often.]
I do have a spare card and I would love to configure the Linux box as a router. Can you give me a simple hat on this or direct me to a "how to"?
Henry
PS. The telephone line to ADSL converter feeds into my router. Is there any way I could direct this first feed straight into the Linux box then direct its output to the router?
PPS. I think my router DOES support pppoe. My Xp boxes and my Linux boxes have been configured to use pppoe. The problem has been how to get them to see each other (Windows to Linux or Linux to Linux).
PPPS. I can't read Chinese and all this is happening in Taiwan where the Windoze systems are Chinese language. Adds to the confusion
if you havn't done anything like this before it can be a pain in the butt. After doing it a few times you'll find you can do most of it off the top of your head

Thanks. I'll tackle this. I'll follow the how-tos but don't know how to configure my router. Per my first post above, this is a Teco box supplied by my adsl provider and there wasn't an instruction book - nor did they have one to give me. I couldn't find any configuring info online, either. So my guess is that it is to be somehow configured from the Linux box - but how?
I'm getting an 8-port hub from someone. I presume the way to connect it all is to have the adsl telephone plug go into my existing router and run one network cable out of it (it has 4 ports) to the linux box and then run a cable out of that box on a second ethernet card into the new hub. Then whatever box I connect to the hub should be able to talk to any other box (using Samba) and can also have internet access ... (correct?)
