I have now switch to Slackware v10, and installed vsftpd. When I started the service I tried to login through console:

ftp> open
(to) 192.168.0.1
Connected to 192.168.0.1.
220 Ensign Server
Name (192.168.0.1:root): anonymous
331 Please specify the password.
Password:
230 Login successful.
ftp>
ftp> ls
550 Permission denied.
ftp: bind: Address already in use
ftp> close
221 Goodbye.
ftp> exit

But I can't login on the host, so I connected up a WinXP laptop over a cross-over cable, but got the same 550 permission denied error.

Can anyone shed any light on to this as I've been stuck for a few weeks now. Thanks.

try to download an rpm package of vsftpd
then issue rpm -i vsftpd-2.0-...package_name command
