hello folks ,

i am having a strange problem with ftp. first of all here is my whole setup

now i am having squid for internet sharing . now the problem is

whenever i tried to connect to any ftp site from my client machine through filezilla or cute FTP where i provide the proxy setting iits not able to connect to any ftp site . thats really very strange cause i can connec to the ftp sites through browser (IE)/Firefox, but i am not able to do so with any ftp client . the proxy settings i provide are like ip address (server): port (3128) <-----squid .

I have the same issue.

There are two types of FTP proxy: One for browsers like IE and one for "pure" FTP clients.

Squid provides an HTTP proxy for browsers and handles the translation between the HTTP client and the FTP server. Most FTP clients won't work through an HTTP proxy.

"Pure" FTP proxies just try to fool FTP clients in to thinking that they are connected directly to the remote machine but have to handle problems like host name resolution and passing on the user name and passwords. They also have to manage data connections. Browsers won't work through this type of proxy.

You have two options:
1. Turn off the proxy options in your FTP clients and connect directly. Then hope that your NAT firewall has enough code to track FTP data connections properly. Use passive mode.
2. Install a dedicated "pure" FTP proxy on the FC3 box. Even then you may have trouble with NAT.

I set up my FTP clients (HTML-Kit etc.) on my Windows box to connect directly, not via a proxy. Some application work and some don't. When I can find the time, I'll look in to setting up an FTP proxy. There aren't that many to choose from.

Hope this helps.
