Strange problem with apt-get FTP

I've been experiencing some strange issues with apt-get lately on my testing/main Debian laptop.

Whenever I try to access an FTP server, it fails with the error message "USER/PASS too long". Yet when I log into the FTP server manually (and anonymously) using gFTP, it works! I checked the

and nothing obvious jumped out at me.

I haven't modified any settings in the /etc/apt directory that would influence the FTP function. Has anybody experienced something like this before?

What happens when you use HTTP instead of FTP with APT? Do you get the same results?

(Wow...way too many acronyms in one line there....)

Using HTTP (which, on my network, is proxied), seems to work, so I'll change over to using that.

What FTP libraries/apps does the apt suite use?
