sticky dynamic IP

Hi,

this question isnt linux related as such, but its caused me a great deal of trouble.

Ive got a web hosting account which whitelists my IP so that I can ftp in, but my dynamic IP constantly changes, and I have to email the hosting company every few days for them to white list my new IP on their server, so that I can gain access. I've contacted my ISP about getting a static IP, but they say they only use dynamic.

Is there a way to have a sticky IP in linux?

No that is not possible, your external IP address is assigned by your ISP. Is it possible for your webhosting account to white-list you based on a domain name? If so, look into getting a dynamic DNS account with dyndns.com or something similar.

If that's not an option, then you will have to change internet providers.

hi SJW,

I have asked the webhosting company to whitelist my IP/domain, but its against their policy.

I think I'll have to change ISP's at the end of my contract, they are truely terrible. I also asked them to send me a WPA2 AES capable router (as the one they sent is TKIP), but they also refused. For anyone in the UK thinking about ISP's, dont go with sky.
