SSH speed problems on a DSL line

All right, so I set up ssh tonight as I plan on using it fairly soon. When connecting on my ibook via the intranet 192.168... it runs smoothly as if I'm sitting in front of my desktop. As soon as I use my external ip and use port forwarding I run into problems.

1) When login in I get "this" message

"reverse mapping checking getaddrinfo for Myipinfohere failed - POSSIBLE BREAKIN ATTEMPT!"

This happens only when I'm trying to log in outside the intranet. And it still lets me login.

2) Secondly, when using it on the intranet everything runs very smoothly. Howeer, when I log in using the external ip I start getting problems. I'll type something on the command line and it'll keep up just fine for around two seconds and then have a pause for five and then it will suddenly catch up with me. Is this just a speed issue? I get 80 kilobytes a second down and up. Shouldn't that be enough? I have enabled port forwarding on my router.

I runn openssh I think, on slackware linux with encryption enabled (blowfish) and X11 forwarding. I'd also like to know if anyone has any security suggestions as I'd like to know!

Thank you so much.

If you use X forwarding, it is really slow and inefficient. Some implementations of VNC, like TightVNC, can do remote desktop across lower bandwidths. Better, there is a new technology called NX which has really big speed improvements for X (supposedly up to 70 times faster) and VNC over slow connections. You can install the FreeNX server on your Linux machine.

Thank you, I don't really need x-forwarding. I'm just trying to set up an encrypted http tunnel so I can get past annoying firewalls (or more importantly my friends can). All I want to do is set up an https proxy but socks won't install (Both dante and regular), squid is beyond confusing, everything else is whaaa? and now ssh doesn't work. *sigh* Note to self: NEVER be a systems admin.

Thank you
