That is entirely possible because your router is the only device with an IP address visiable to the outside world. Your two computers (XP and Slack) each have an internal IP address that is only visable to you.

To find out your IP address on your slack box type in /sbin/ifconfig and look for a device that says eth0 or eth1. Then go over to your windows box, open up a command prompt and type in ipconfig. If your two IP addresses are the same then you definatly have problems, but they should be very very similer and different only in the last number. They should look something like 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 or something close to that.

From there with your XP box and that command prompt still open type in ping slack-ip-address-here where the address would be the 192.168 number the ifconfig command spits out at you. You should see it say "reply" 4 times. If it does than you can launch putty, and ssh into your slack box via that 192 number and you should have no problems.

I hope this helps and if it doesn't or if you need any clarification at all please feel free to post back and myself or one of the other helpful members will be able to help you out.

Cheers
