Question Smoothwall turns in to BrickWall

I have installed Smoothwall on an old P75 computer.
It is set up as "Green Red", Static IP, no DHCP, no proxy.
I boot the machine in the morning and it works fine for about 30 min. then I can't access the web. I can ping the red card from the network but nothing outside the LAN. Strangely, at this point, I can't ping the red card from the SmoothWall computer.
I have no idea what it could be.
It's not the NIC because if I replace the hard drive and run a Winblows95 OS with Wingate, it runs all day [barring the typical system crashes ].

Anyone have an idea as to what the problem may be?

Thanks,
Steve

Could it possibly be a DHCP update issue where you are getting a new IP for the ext NIC and it isn't updating it properly. I am not very familiar with smoothwall as I use an iptables script.

What internet connection are you using and do you know how long your DHCP lease is for that comes from your ISP.

If that isn't it I am not sure where to go from there except to try an iptables script to see if it could be a problem with smoothwall.

Thanks for the replies.
After talking with our ISP, I found out that we have what they call an "Assigned IP address" even though it never changes and we must use DHCP.
The interesting thing is that this computer was running W95 with Wingate as a proxy server and the DSL modem nic was configured with a static IP (which is where I got the notion that we didn't need DHCP).
I'm going to give it a shot this morning and see if this solves the problem.

Thanks,
Steve

Just to close this thread, setting up the RED nic for DHCP solved the problem and I am up and running

Thanks everyone!
