Unhappy Smoothwall Interface Problem

Hi

I have a problem with the smoothwall RED interface + Xover cable to a Cisco 1600 router or another system using 10BaseT card.

Both cards (RED and GREEN) are showing as 10BaseT when connected to a switch. But...

I can't ping the following from the RED interface.

- itself (IP)
- cisco router
- another 10BaseT only system (our ftp server with ISA 3com card)

The only way is to connect to the switch and ping something, then use the Xover cable! (the GREEN interface has no problems using the Xover.)

Why can't it ping itself?

I have tried using the folloing cards:
Intel etherexpress pro 100 (pci)
3Com EtherLink III (isa)
Genius GE2500 III (realtek pci)

I am running Smoothwall Corporate Edition.

Any help would be great as Smoothwall are all out of ideas.

Thanks
A very stressed Graham

Hi Graham

My problem is similar
only with the smoothwall RED interface connected to a Alcatel Speed Touch Pro.
or another system using 10BaseT card.

The difference is: I can ping itself

like you I can't ping the following from the RED interface.

- Alcatel Speed Touch Pro
- another 10BaseT only system

I am running Smoothwall GPL

Thanks
A higly stressed Paulo

I found the problem with mine was having DNS servers set in the /var/smoothwall/ethernet/settings file when they are unavailable.

if you leave them blank you will proberbly have no touble using ping.

It was trying to resolve the ip you were tyring to ping and failing.
