Hello
Briefly tried smoothwall, so some idea
red = frog
orange nic = only to run servers visible to internet. I think visible to green, but unsure.
green = internal.
So your basic setup has frog on red, dhcp.
NIC on green to internal network.
Rest of machines have ip of green nic as their default gateway. If you want to use the proxy, I think youll need to give the proxy ports to your internal machines as well. Its in the manual so I guess you'll need to RTFM. With the speed of the dsl, you don't really need proxying.
As to how to know its connected, the S/W web page should change from dialling to connected.
There are apparently problems with upload speeds with smoothwall, a lot of people are trying something called ipcop (look for it on google), which apparently works better, and comes without the attitude.
Just got this up and runing myself with some assistance from these pages. Set up the smoothwall to assign the ip's to the client pc with dhcp. Web proxy will work fine with transparent clicked on as i think you have sussed out. Ensure that the client pc is running a dhcp client ie dhcpcd ( I choose dhcpd which failed) and that the network is up and running. Use netconfig on the client pc to set up the networking, in eth0 enable dhcp and specify the ip of your smoothie box as the gateway.
Hope this helps, if you need more info I can take a quick look at the numbers and options setup on my system and post those.
ok thx, i also think i may have faulty software becuase when im insetup it doesnt save the controller for the USB its always read UNSET. and also i found the patch 7, doesnt like it, is syas i need auth to update?
Ok my computer have been set to dhcp and still the same problem, the adsl modem wont dial, it just read idle. Although I haven’t filled in VCI and VPI because I don’t know them and im pretty sure the BTO didn’t give me any detail like that, so if anyone know this info its might help.
Also I have noticed that in setup the adsl modem controller is set to: UNSET and wont change no matter what! Same with the orange nic.
Now im new to this but something is tell me that not meant to happen.
ok still the same problem, i ahve included a file with a picture of my dialup could someone check this is all right plz?
hmm i think the problem is that in setup when is asks for the USB controller is wont change from UNSET?! no matter where i do it from how i do, just wont change.
(duno how to display a picture on here so email me for the pic plz
Have pretty much the same setup, Usb Speedtouch DSL modem, Internal Range set to 192.168.0.x, DHCP setup and client machine connects fine to Internal IP. I have Installed Smoothwall 0.9.9, updated the usb drivers and all looks fine to me. The logs however show the following errors :
21:11:54 pppd Using interface ppp0
21:11:54 pppd Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyp0
21:11:54 pppd Warning - secret file /etc/ppp/pap-secrets has world and/or group access
21:11:54 pppd Modem hangup
21:11:54 pppd Connection terminated.
21:11:54 pppd Using interface ppp0
21:11:54 pppd Warning - secret file /etc/ppp/pap-secrets has world and/or group access
21:11:54 pppd write: warning: Input/output error (5)
21:11:54 pppd Modem hangup
21:11:54 pppd Connection terminated.
21:11:54 pppd Child process /usr/local/bin/pppoa2 -vpi 0 -vci 38 (pid 242) terminated with signal 2
Now got it dialing in, but after about 2-3mins it stops responding. You can still ping the internal IP address of the smoothwall from the client machine but the html interface won't work and the net stops working.
All the patches have been applied etc.
A friend of mine is having the same problems. The internet connection seems to die. Actually, smoothwall won't let you get back the the internet. Strange....
