goto www.kernel.org and get the latest kernel. compile it using make oldconfig uing the config file from your mandrake kernel, and try that before you do anything drastic like buy a new card or new distro.

A wire...

I was wondering through all this what type of connection you had as well, but I didn't mean physically How do you connect, or rather, how do you authenticate yourself on the network? Is this software driven, a DSL Modem, a Cable modem, a hub in the middle of the room... Do you have a cat5 cable plugged directly into the wall?

There HAVE to be some geeks on campus that have run into similar problems running linux, or if not, it could very well likely be hardware based issues, however I find that quite odd... Not that a new NIC could cost all that much, I recently got a 10/100 Netgear, powered by a Tulip module for less than 20 bucks; but rather that it's odd that it would be only fished out in Linux.

It's certainly worth it to try another LIVE Distro, such as Knoppix which will autodetect everything for you, to see what kind of throughput you get there.

Cool

Slow internet on SUSE

I had a similar problem on SUSE 9.1. The symptom was a long delay before acessing any site, and tnen what looked like a normal speed data transfer. In some cases the effect was simply a very slow transfer.

After MUCH pain, I traced the problem to broken IPV6 system in SUSE 9.1. I had to disable all IPV6, and the problem vanished.

There is an obscure reference in the SUSE support page

( see http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2003/1...illa_ipv6.html )

which says that Mozilla uses ipv6 for name resolution, and that SUSE firewall 2 blocks
these requests. This is NOT my problem, but I tried disabling ipv6 anyhow using the
instructions given:

SUSE Linux 9.1 (in connection with Kernel 2.6.x) includes the file /etc/modprobe.conf instead of /etc/modules.conf.

If you want to disable IPv6 on a permanent basis in SUSE Linux 9.1, change the file /etc/modprobe.conf as follows:

Change

alias net-pf-10 ipv6

to

alias net-pf-10 ipv6
install ipv6 /bin/true

I don't know if this is of any use to you, but it can't hurt to try!

Good luck!
