SIOCADDRT:Network unreachable

Hi all,
I have just installed redhat9 in Sun Microsystem(i386)machine.And i have a problem of getting this machine into internet.I have tried ifconfig command it didn't work and when i tried to add route to my gateway with route add -net default gw ipaddr eth0, i got the error msg:SIOCADDRT:Network unreachable.Even if i ping to DNS or other machines in my network i get the error msg"Network unreachabel".But the cables are connected correctly.
Is anyone has an idea of what the problem might be?
Petero.

If you do an ifconfig (/sbin/ifconfig) at least the lo interface should be listed....do you get an error?

Is your interface up?
>ifup eth0
