sharing internet with linux

I ve seen many people to share easily their internet connection among linux and windows boxes , but i face some dificulties .

I have a slackware box , a wndows xp box and a usb dsl modem

The adsl modem is attached to the windows box . To receive internet from the ISP i had to set Preferred DNS server and Alternate dns server . The ip
obtained automatically .

The ethernet of the windows box is connected to the slackware box with a crossover cable . What i did was as su then netconfig dhcp with no nameserver as i have no idea about it .

to share the inernet connection i went to the Setup a home or small office network and followed the wizard with succesfull end

The problem is didn't work .
for the ethernet of the windows box i have

ip 192.168.0.1
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
deafaul gateway nothing
preferred DNS server the one from my ISP
alternate DNS server the one from my ISP

any help ???

Why when my netconfig is configures as dhcp the ifconfig displays only the loopback and alternatively when is configured as statik ip the ifconfig reports the ethernet as normal ??

thank you

What are the setup of your Linux box?
Does it have a default route?
Code:
route -n
Can you ping windows box/IP on the internet/host on Internet through DNS?

You will have to set a default gateway on your linux box.
This should be the IP that your windows box has on the interface that connects to your linux box.
Code:
route add default gw <ip of your windows box here>
