Setting up the internet on fedora c1
Hi, can anyone help me with setting up the internet on Fedora?, it is actually on the network, when i ping it, i get 4 hops.. with none lost, also when i DNS it on IRC, it works. But for some strange reason it wont tracerroute ip's or resolved DNS.
I set the servers hostname as alsnet.
i havent installed the firewalls. i'm also downloading the mandrake OS, lol.
This might help since fedora is not for newbies i suppose :P
Doesnt your network have a DHCP server running ???
if DHCP is running, use 'redhat-config-network' to add an ethernet connection, and setect detect settings via dhcp.
if there is no dhcp, you will have to manually enter a free IP, the netmask its on, the default gateway, and the dns servers manually.... as you will for any distro.
Yeah, you ISP will be running a DHCP server.... but is your windows machine running a DHCP server ? and is your windows machine correctly configured to act as a router ?
Ok.... here are the basics...
if you want windows to act as a router (share its internet connection)
it will need 2 Network interfaces... One connecting WIndows to the LAN, and one connecting windows to the internet. you probably have windows hooked upto a USB broadband moden, and an ethernet card hooked up to a HUB/Switch right ?
since you only have 2 machines, there is no point running a DHCP server.
setup windows and linux ip's statically... like so.
dont change the settings of the internet interface, just the LAN interface.
windows LAN ip = 192.168.1.100
lwindows LAN netmask = 255.255.255.0
and change the Linux ip statically..
Linux ip = 192.168.1.101
linux netmask = 255.255.255.0
Linux Gateway = 192.168.1.100
thats linux all setup...
make sure the eth0 interface has started and you are all ready.
Now you just need to setup windows to act as a router....
i dont use windows so i have no idea what software / whatever you need installed.
maybe windows is set to share its internet by default, i dont know.
