Setting Up Internet in Fedora

I am VERY new to using Linux and just installed Fedora Core 1 on my laptop (I have a Gateway Solo 5300). When I originally ran the Internet Connection Wizard, it did not find my modem. I also have Windows 2000 running on my system, so I shut down Fedora and rebooted into Windows. From there I got the device information for my modem, shut down again, and rebooted into Fedora. After putting in all the information, it says the connection is Active, but I don't think it is connecting...I heard no modem noises and I can't get any websites or the messager to work. It says "host unavailable". Any help on this would be appreciated. Also, if anyone has any other helpful tips for a beginner user of Fedora, please e-mail or instant message me.

Thanks!!!

What type of modem is it? I suppose it is an internal winmodem, most probably ltwinmodem. Search in google for "winmodem linux". Maybe you can post the details of your modem here.

And you should have read this first:

I had read that thread already, and thought my problem sounded more like that of the guys in the last post, which didn't help me. My modem is an ActionTec 56K V.90 Modem and its listed as a PCI device. Other than that, I don't know. Its in a laptop, and I can't take it apart to get the info off the chipset or try a different modem.

Oh, I forgot to put, I did do a winmodem search at Google...it doesn't do me any good without knowing what the chipset info is. How can I get this info without being able to physically look at my modem?

Hi.

Take a look at these links:

http://forums.us.dell.com/supportfor...ssage.id=14702

http://start.at/modem

It mentions that actiontec modem uses lucent chipset. So try looking for linux driver for lucent winmodem/ltwinmodem. I think the driver (usually in tar.gz or if you're fortunate you can find an rpm for it) usually comes with specific instruction for it.

Then after installing the driver you would need to run 'wvdialconf' and then dial using wvdial. All of these has to be done using root account.

I hope this info may give you some more idea about your modem. Since lucent winmodem linux driver is the easiest to find, I think it will be okay (since I also have ltwinmodem).

As for chipset info, linux ltwinmodem driver gives general support for all lucent winmodem. So there is no need to know that in detail.

anybody got your lucent based winmodem work on fedora?

Hi guys, I came upon this post and seems that I am not the only one having trouble getting fedora to prob my winmodem, I didn't get it probed by RH9 either, I just switched to suSE 9 recently with the same box, and suSE detected the modem and installed the neccessary driver for me without hassle to compile and build_rpm for the modem.

Saw some posting for links to get the drivers, from http://www.heby.de, got the neccessary driver files but seems that it only support up to kernel 2.2 (or maybe I am wrong, I'm still very new to linux, only 2 months of exposure), and Fedora Core has a kernel of 2.4. I tried compiling the driver using the build_rpm or build_module and keep getting error due to kernel issue.

Has anyone got your lucent based winmodem work under fedora so far? Any help would be appreciated. I didn't use suSE beause I keep getting the system crashed, therefore, I try again with fedora.

Hope someone can help.

Thanks,

Regards
Lonetree

May be it was caused by the driver. I happened to me (linux crash), when I installed experimental driver for my internal modem. Try looking for correct stable driver for your modem.

How did you install the driver? Was it using rpm package or tar.gz package?

It was a tar.gz package. Can I maybe deinstall it and reinstall it?

Go to the folder where you compile the driver and then 'make uninstall'. It will uninstall the modules and any other files that the package installed before.
