Setting up NS Server?

Probably is a easy question which I should have googled more but all results I find is for running major NS servers.

So I have some domain names. Their A record has always been pointing to my ip, but now I am getting upgrade to 100mbit and with that comes stupid dynamic ips

So I would like to just set the C name to a no-ip or simular but domain name rules says the the domain cant be pointed to a cname, only subdomains can.

So I was thinking, what if I would point the NS entry to my no-ip address and set up BIND. Would this work? Could I then using bind respond with the correct current ip? How would I set this up?

Do you need to set up a nameserver? If you're only trying to get your domains visible on the internet, someone like http://www.dyndns.com/ will do that for you. You can have multiple domains resolving to your single IP address.

If you're providing a local DNS for your LAN, you can use your LAN IP for those same domains to be resolved locally. That way it doesn't matter what your external IP address is.

If you're setting up a fully functional DNS server with transfers to/from other servers - someone else here would be way more help

havent decided on what to do but it looks like i will have to setup a fully functional dns server to get it to work. I already own two domains which I need to use.

I am thinking, if I setup bind and set a short ttl on my domain and then make a simple sh script to update the A record when my ip changes then that would work, wouldnt it? Only thing I am worried about is that some dns servers override the ttl :/

Ok I finally got it to work so I will post how I did it for the future if anyone else needs this.

1. Go reg a dynamic address, like no-ip.com, dyndns.com, zoneedit.com
2. Set up the linux client to automaticly update your ip withhelp of the dhcp client dhclient.
3. Set your domains nameserver to the registered address.
4. Follow the following guide, http://ops.ietf.org/dns/dynupd/secure-ddns-howto.html

You should defently use dhclient, it supports scripts to run when you receive a new ip so depending on the TTL you set it will update after the selected time.
