I am VERY new to linux. I am running Mandrake Linux 9.1 and I can't get my DSL to work. I have a Sprint 645 series if that is any help. Please reply to this, because I am very tired of using Windows, and would very much like for Linux to go online.
First:
Are you using a router?
Connected directly to the modem?
Using a static IP or DHCP? (can check this in windows by typing ipconfig /all into a DOS prompt)
Are you planning on sharing this internet connection?
Next:
What network card do you have? is it detected by your system?
is the driver inserted? (post the result of typing lsmod into the linux CLI)
is linux configured to network the same way as windows? (post the contents of your /etc/network/interfaces file)
Also:
Post any errors you're getting at boot, especially anythign that has to do with "eth0"
It is a DHCP.
I'm not sharing or using a router right at this time, but in a few weeks, I'll have wireless home networking.
My network card is an "Intel 82558-based integrated ethernet with Wake on LAN".
I'm pretty sure that it is detected by my system, because when I type in "Ifconfig", it comes up with 0 errors.
I don't know what you mean by typing in Ismod into the linux CLI, and when I tried to go to etc/network/interfaces, it said it was not a real directory. I went into /etc, and could not find network or anything like it anywhere.
At startup, it doesn't say any errors, and the only thing it says about eth0 is when it pulls up the interface.
Actually, I'm getting wireless networking in a couple of days, and I will be connecting through a router, so give me instructions as if I already have wireless networking and a router.
/etc/network/interfaces must be debian-specific... didn't know that, sorry.
I don't know what the equivalent would be for MDK, but browse around your etc directory for something having to do with networking. Just read all the files you think are relative, and post whatever you find that mentions "DHCP" or "static" or "gateway" etc.
Linux CLI = command line interface. Sorry for the acronym, I'm lazy.
just type lsmod into a console.
As for getting you set up with wireless networking, I'm way out of my depth - I'm only familiar with ethernet configs. It'll also be relatively card-specific to get things up, I'm sure, so let's wait until you've got a make and model to get some info on. Make sure you get one that advertises linux support.
