Try running Xconfigurator. If the link is broken that should fix it. Else get the RPMs and just install. You can use Xconfigurator itself again to configure it.

Also try "which X" to see if it is in your path. And then go to /usr/X11R6/bin and do a " ls X* ". You should see the installed servers along with some other software then.
First find out if you have X installed.
For an rpm-based distro run:
rpm -q -a|grep XFree
If you get an result (packages printed) you should have X installed. The problem may be that you don't have all the packages. Look for something like XFree86-SVGA (on your installation cd) and try to install it (rpm -i packagename).
If still in trouble write which distro you use (and if it's rpm-based, copy the result of rpm -q -a|grep XFree).
