Samba can't find null host

I have a RedHat 9 set up on a virtual PC (VMWare) and networking it with the physical machine running Windows XP professional. The Windows machine sees the Linux machine inthe Network Neighborhood with no problems. However, when I try to run Samba, it tells me this:

Couldn't display "smb://", because no host
"(null)" could be found. Check that the spelling is
corrent and that your proxy settings are correcrt.

Can someone give me a clue what this means and where to start looking for the fix?

A tried changing the smb.conf file as suggested in other related threads, but to no avail.
What does "no host "(null)" can be found exactly mean?
Where do I check that the spelling is correct?
Where do I check the proxy settings?
Why should I check the proxy settings if I am not using one?
