samba 2.2..8 and winx pro

Hello, I am trying to setup a samba PDC w/ a WinXP Pro client. I followed the directions on..

I get to the point where i try to change my XP Pro from a work group to domain. It asks for the user/password with permission to join the domain. I enter root with my password. but it gives me the error "the specified user does not exist"

I have put in root in the smbpasswd file with "smbpasswd -a root"

your help is appreciated, thanks

If I remember correctly Samba cannot read XP logon information do too some added security microsoft implemented.

We have done a registry hack and that will allow xp to get log onto samba. I am not at the office at the moment but you should be able to find it by doing a google search for something like

xp logon samba

There are some additional steps you need to make with Windows XP. This is covered in the section called "Client configuration".

You need to:

configure a few settings in the local security policy.

download and load a patch.

We have added XP to Samba domains a couple of times. It is a straight foward process. Let us know if you have additional difficulties.
