RTNETLINK answers: Invalid argument

We are in the process of shanging our subnet from 255.255.255.0 to 255.255.240.0. I can go to /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and change netmask

original:

DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=static
BROADCAST=172.16.1.255
IPADDR=172.16.1.132
NETMASK=255.255.255.0
NETWORK=172.16.1.0
ONBOOT=yes

changed:
DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=static
BROADCAST=172.16.1.255
IPADDR=172.16.1.132
NETMASK=255.255.240.0
NETWORK=172.16.1.0
ONBOOT=yes

I get the RTNETLINK message: RTNETLINK answers: Invalid argument

I have changed /etc/resolv.conf for DNS, /etc/hosts for host name update. (these should all be irrel to change)

Any quick help is apprec.

RH7.3 - 2.4.8-10 kern

when u change subnet. your network and broadcast must be configured for this subnet.

your broadcast and network address still are configured for 255.255.255.0 subnet.
u may use "ipcalc" to calculate broadcast and notwork address of that subnet

also u may use "netconfig" to cofigure your net. it calculates broadcast and network address for u.
