I have slackware 10 installed on my box. Im not an expert on linux but i know a thing or two...
Anyways, Im running the 2.4.26 kernel and the rp-pppoe (version 3.5) works fine!
Im trying to migrate to 2.6.9... I compiled the 2.6.9, it took me a little to get all the right modules, but now it seems to be all set (even the sound works lol). Im using the realtek 8139 network adapter (8139too). And i know its working properly on the 2.6.9 because (if i switch the cable) i can SSH on other network machines.
BUT THE RP-PPPOE PROGRAM WONT WORK!!!
It simply shows the "." and after a while it say that could not connect.... And i've left it for more then an hour and still no deal... (on the 2.4.26 it will connect within 2 dots)....
I've tried to re-compile the rp-pppoe program on the 2.6.9 but still nothing at all...
Does anyone has ANY clue about this?????? Please, I´m really ancious to start using the 2.6.xx kernels, but without internet, no way... heheh
Thanks
Ariel
Btw - one thing that is different, on the 2.4.26, when i do a lsmod, it shows 2 modules that use the 8139too -> mii and crc32... and those modules are not shown on the 2.6.9... maybe thats a clue??? Any help is welcome
If you can ssh other hosts in the network, it's probably not a problem with your network card. 8139too is probably compiled into the kernel in stead of as a module.
Don't have a clue what else it could be tho, sorry
There MUST be a little trick or someting..... right?
I mean, it doesnt seems right.... everything works, exept the most important key - the internet.... lol
Anyways... thanks for the help... I just hope someone knows whats going on
With 2.6 I have found that the kernel modules have changed, for my SMC Etherpower card, I used to be using tulip, but now I am using a different modules. I also use Roaring Penguin with the 2.6 kernel (installed it last night) and it works fine. And my distribution is a lot older than yours, it's a Redhat 7.3 machine (though I have upgraded many packages, including X.org and Roaring Penguin, manually).
I'd say, make sure you're using the right driver and make sure your setup is correct. Try turning OFF "Use synchronous PPP," you might not have support for that in the kernel. Turn the Firewall off. Try a different network card, see if it works then. When you bring it up, make sure you type /sbin/ifconfig eth0 up 0.0.0.0 so it doesn't get blocked. Try unloading the kernel module and reloading it, etc.
Tried that, done that..
I havent used the synchronous PPP even on the 2.4.26
Also havent set the firewall
Tried on my other network card, Linksys LNE100tx (using the tulip driver), also no good.
the ifconfig eth0 0.0.0.0 had to be done on the 2.4, so it was one of the first things i tried on the 2.6....
One of the things that are bothering me, the ifconfig command on the 2.6 shows one extra line.... looks like its for the IPV6... should i try to recompile the 2.6.9 without that ipv6? I dont even know what it is... lol
Still searching, no answers yet....
Thanks
Ariel
