linmix, did you get this resolved?
If not, check your firewall settings on your XP box. With the firewall on and default settings, it does not respond to pings.
After some fiddling around I've found out how to make XP accept incoming ping requests ... it took me a while as I have a Spanish version and didn't know exactly what I was looking for

Uh, no. You should be able to share it without too much problem if the printer is supported in cups. No need for samba. If your printer was attached to the linux box, you would need to share it through samba.
Not sure if I understand correctly. I had the printer working with cups previously, but with very poor printing results (definition/speed) so since I have a n XP box in my LAN I'd like to print through the XP drivers.
