In RedHat, you make this modification to a file called /etc/sysconfig/static-routes (with may not exist, but is in fact read by /etc/rc.d/init.d/network).
Here's the format:
{any|ethx} {host|net} {w.x.y.z} netmask {w.x.y.z} gw {w.x.y.z}

so like:
any net 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 gw 192.168.0.1

Good question!

You could do that, but the /etc/sysconfig/static-routes file is the place where static routes are meant to be kept...
