RH9 Internet Sharing USB Cable Modem

Well, I installed RedHat 9 successfuly, and it automatically had supporrt for my USB cable modem.

What I want to do now is share the internet connection with other computers on my network at home.

Can anyone help me out? I'm not sure where to start, even after reading a couple of outdated tutorials online about doing this...

You need to setup whats called IP Masquerading (also known as NAT - Network Address Translation). Take a look at http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/IP-Masquer...WTO/index.html for details on how to get this running.

Are you going to use cables or do you plan on using wireless technology?

well... USB cable from the modem to the computer (is up and working fine), then a 10/100 nic to a hub... from the hub to various computers... i've got 1 win98 box, 1 winXP box, an xbox, and a linux laptop. (and the linux "server"/"gateway" or what have you)

Something I was reading about online when it came to "sharing" and internet connection was that you have a choice of making the linux box into a gateway or a router.... and i wasn't sure what the difference was, and which I should be looking into.

I know the basics about what gateways and routers are, but i'm not sure what difference it will make with my local network, and it being able to share the linux box's internet connection.

The term 'router' and 'gateway' are pretty much interchangable. In this case they refer to the same thing - a box that will take packets from one network interface and forward them onto another interface on a different subnet.

cheers
