well... USB cable from the modem to the computer (is up and working fine), then a 10/100 nic to a hub... from the hub to various computers... i've got 1 win98 box, 1 winXP box, an xbox, and a linux laptop. (and the linux "server"/"gateway" or what have you)
Something I was reading about online when it came to "sharing" and internet connection was that you have a choice of making the linux box into a gateway or a router.... and i wasn't sure what the difference was, and which I should be looking into.
I know the basics about what gateways and routers are, but i'm not sure what difference it will make with my local network, and it being able to share the linux box's internet connection.
The term 'router' and 'gateway' are pretty much interchangable. In this case they refer to the same thing - a box that will take packets from one network interface and forward them onto another interface on a different subnet.
