Question RH 7.1 Server, Linksys Router, telnet not stable


I have a RH 7.1 server set up as a DCHP, SAMBA, Apache, MySQL server and more. It is linked to a 3com 8port hub which is uplinked to a Linksys BEFSX41 Firewall Router, assigned a static IP by my ADSL provider. This location is called "Carnduff".

I have a second location ("Carlyle") with a Win2k machine (also with a static IP on ADSL) which is trying to telnet to my router's IP, which then forwards the request to my Linux server. A telnet connection can be established reliably, but for some reason it keeps getting dropped after a little while.

If I go to my Win2k machine in Carnduff I can ping and tracert to Carlyle no problem. If I go to my Linux command prompt here in Carnduff I can ping with no problem but the command "./sbin/traceroute xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" times out. I am wondering if this indicates part of the problem.

Here is my ./sbin/ifconfig result:

Note the high number of collisions for eth0. Any suggestions and help would be great. I have had someone from a whole different part of North America try to hold the telnet session and they eventually got bumped too ("host closed connection").

I've seen high colision rates due to bad network cables. -mk

If your boxes are networked via a hub, then generally, they run at 10Mbps Half Duplex. The nature of half duplex is that you can send or receive, but not do both at once. If you want to do that, then you'll need a switch which can provide full duplex connectivity.

The large number of collisions might be because you're connected via a hub.
