It can see that there is a wireless network there, but it can't get an ip address from the dhcp server. Any ideas on how I can fix this short of using the dhcp server within my linksys unit?

Hmm thats gonna be weird. Why did you get a router instead of just an access point?
Anyway, off the top of my head, you'll need to define the router to not be a DHCP server, thendefine its LAN IP address to be one your linux router will allow {This may not be necessary, I am not 100% familiar with how the switch part of this device operates}. Unfortunately the router will not get a LAN IP via DHCP so you will have to set a reserved IP up on the linux box for this router {actaully its a switch at this point}.
Then connect your linux router's to any LAN port on it.
Only other thing I can think you might need to change would be the dynamic routing options, maybe take it off gateway.
Also setting the GATEWAY address on your laptop to be your linux router should help. Or maybe set up a static routing table on the router? Hmm.... Still, I think your best option is to take it back and just get a wireless AP.
