Remote serial devices

We have a customer that has a retail operation. They want to put a Redhat 8 server in the back office, and they want to use Redhat 6.2 (emulation issue) at each register. Each register will telnet in to the server to run the software.

Problem: We need to run 3 devices per register: A parallel Display Pole, a Serial Printer, and a serial Pinpad for ATM cards.

If the devices were attached to the server, we'd identify them as /dev/lp0, /dev/ttyS0 & /dev/ttyS1. No problem. But the devices are attached to the "remote" register. How do we identify the devices on the remote machine.

We tried to connect the machines using NFS, but the software ran so slow, it was unusable.

Ideas?

Thanks,

Bill Bowes
