Hi... Got a monster problem here, that I can't figure out. I'm somewhat of a noob, so any help is more than appreciated.
I have a more than competent PC with an integrated SIS900 ethernet card.
The comp plugs into a hub/switch (not router) along with 2 other Win XP computers.
My LAN works in Win XP, but Redhat 9 can't connect to the network.
As for my settings: I have all the IPs and subnet masks set correctly (as in manually). The switch LEDs show that I'm connected to the switch, as are the other computers. Windows OSs can ping each other, but Redhat 9 only lets me ping "localhost". "ifconfig" also doesn't show any errors, so it must be some other setting that's causing the problem.
Could it be the "workgroup" that the Windows machines have set? I couldn't find a "workgroup" setting in linux.
Also "ethtool" does not let me change any settings (like speed limitations, tests, or duplex), and says that there's no data available.
Please... I've lost so much time putting in the same damn settings, I'm starting to give up on linux.
Can we see your ifconfig output? What are the IPs of the other computers? Have you tried another cable? Have you tried another hub port? Has this NIC worked before?
Well, I've done all those things before Peter. I haven't tried another cable or comp, since I have another partition with Win XP on this one and everything works just fine. I'll post my ifconfig output as soon as I'm at my home comp.
There is one thing... My computer is plugged into a "HUB". Not a router, no DHCP or other settings. That hub (aka switch) also has the modem plugged in, so the pppoe may have problems with that. Either way, I'm buying a router soon, so I'll see... Maybe that's what it is.
Well, I gave up. I switched to Suse, and I guess I should have it working soon enough. I did get it to a working connection (or at least that's what it said), but didn't get any traffic through. Feels good to be making any kind of progress though.
Anyway, if it is the hub, then it most likely has a bad port. Did you try another port on it? Can you post your ifconfig output? Modem plugged into the hub? You mean cable modem? That shouldn't matter, unless it is giving you a DHCP ip. I assume all of your machines are using static IPs.
