Redhat 8 Dual NIC

hi,
I have 2 NICs on RH 8, one is onboard, it seems RH 8 only wants to talk to the onboard NIC, that is , when i plug cable on the other NIC the ping doesn't have response ( not even response from gateway router). pluging the cable into the onboard NIC is just fine.
then I enabled the ip_forward suddenly the other NIC starts to ping the ipaddresses. I am glad I can use either of the NICs now, but i want to know why it was behaving like that?
thanks

ok, just have in mind that by simply having more than a net card in a linux system, what you get is a router.
So you must have some routing knowledge and set up a logical routing table within your system.

That's why when you enabled ip_forward, everything started to work: You enabled traffic between both ends.

Think of it as a tube full with water. If you block one end, the water does not falls out of the tube...
