Samba and Dual NIC

Hi, I have a computer running Mandrake 10.0, with two ethernet cards in it:
eth0 - Connects to a laptop running windows which uses a 10.0.0.x ip
eth1 - Connects to university network using class B 172.17.0.x style ip range

I have set up the connections and have used the "Internet Connection Sharing" wizard to link them together using NAT.
However, when I change the firewall settings using the Firewall wizard (Shorewall i think), I allow only samba and Ping requests to access the internet (eth1). I have found though that this does not work, and the only way I can see all shares on the main network from eth1 is to "Allow Everything". This is very annoying and inscure.
Am I doing something wrong?
Thanks.
